My family often complained about it, and through conversations with other calligraphy enthusiasts, I found that this issue was widespread. However, because traditional belief regards the scent of ink as an essential feature of calligraphy, there has been little research or attempt to address it. Therefore, I aimed to identify the causes of this odor through scientific investigation and to develop an effective method to reduce it.

Research Methods and Experimental DesignUnder the guidance of my mentor, I designed and conducted a series of experiments, including:
- Sensory Testing: Used qualitative preference and discrimination tests to confirm the presence of odor in calligraphy works and to collect feedback from calligraphy practitioners on their acceptance of odor reduction.
- Synthesis of Antibacterial Nanomaterials: Used carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a carrier to successfully synthesize and immobilize silver nanoparticles (CMC-AgNPs) and zinc hydroxide nanoparticles (CMC-Zn(OH)₂), providing long-term antibacterial properties.
- Antibacterial Testing: Employed inhibition zone assays to evaluate the antibacterial performance of the nanomaterials and ensure their effectiveness.
- Ink Writing Tests: Invited professional calligraphers to use the self-developed Ink-Mate prototype alongside traditional ink to assess its effects on writing smoothness, color performance, and odor suppression.

Research Outcomes and Competition Experience
This study successfully developed Ink-Mate, an eco-friendly odor suppressor designed to be used alongside traditional ink. Experimental results showed that Ink-Mate effectively reduced unpleasant odors from calligraphy works without compromising writing quality. The project was recognized in the S.T. Yau High School Science Award competition and further tested in practice through the China Thinks Big (CTB) program.
Through participating in research competitions, I gained hands-on experience with the entire scientific process—from hypothesis formation to experimental verification—and learned the importance of teamwork and time management. In the CTB project, I faced challenges such as setting up the exhibition booth without sufficient team support, which helped me appreciate the value of collaboration. Moreover, through close communication with my mentor, I learned how to efficiently refine and adjust my research focus to enhance its relevance and competitiveness.

Reflections and Future Directions
Looking back on the entire research process, I realized that different competitions emphasize different aspects of a project. For example, the S.T. Yau High School Science Award focuses more on solving practical problems, while the CTB program highlights applicability within a broader social context. Therefore, in future research, I plan to pay greater attention to overall project planning to ensure that my work can meet the expectations of different platforms.
This research experience not only deepened my interest in the interdisciplinary study of biology and chemistry but also strengthened my commitment to exploring unknown problems through scientific thinking. In the future, I hope to continue investigating the antibacterial properties of nanomaterials and further optimize the Ink-Mate formulation, aiming to make it an innovative product widely applicable in the field of calligraphy.
